Eyelids Surgery
Blepharoplasty", from the Greek words for "eyelid" and "to mold or shape" commonly known as “eyelid surgery”. It involves an operation on the upper or lower eyelids to remove excess folds of the skin, and bags under the eyes and sometimes drooping of the eyebrows.
As we age, we accumulate unnecessary skin in many parts of our body. These changes can result in a tired or forlorn look, and many patients complain that others notice "bags under my eyes.
This surgery will make your eyes look brighter, larger, and more rested by removing loose skin, stretched muscle, and excess fat. In some people this procedure will improve vision by removing the excessive skin of the upper eyelids which can hag down and interfere with peripheral vision. Your eyes will look more youthful. The surgery of your lower lids should smooth out bulges, take away fat bags from under your eyes, and make the skin snugger. The results tend to be long lasting
The procedure is most often done on a hospital outpatient operating room. It is usually performed using local anaesthetic and intravenous sedation, or general anaesthesia depending on individual preference and health factors.
For the upper lids, the surgeon makes the incision in the upper lid skin crease above your eyelashes resulting in a well hidden scar. Excess skin is removed as well as excess fat. The incision is sewn together with very small sutures with great cosmetic results.
The lower eye lid approach is very similar. The surgeon can make an incision either right under the eyelashes or inside the lid so there is no skin incision depending on the amount of skin to be removed and other factors. Excess skin and fat will also be removed.
Complications such as bleeding, poor healing, and infection are extraordinarily rare. After the procedure soreness and discomfort may be present with mild to no pain. Mild pain can easily be controlled with medication. You will rest quietly with your head slightly elevated. Cold compresses may be applied to your eyes to reduce post-operative swelling and bruising which last between 5 to 7 days days depending on the extent of bruising.
The eyes will be sensitive to light, wind and dust for 2 to 4 weeks and the upper lids may be irritated and teary for about 15 days. Contact lenses should not be worn for 15 days and eye make up for 7 to 10 days. Stitches will be removed by your surgeon 3 to 5 days after the operation, depending on the kind of stitches used. Most people feel and look ready to work about 1 week after surgery, exercise can be reintroduced at this same time but bending over or lifting should be avoided to prevent eye swelling and discomfort.
With the elimination of sagging, superfluous skin and fat around the eyes, you will reflect a more youthful and rested appearance.
