FAQ

General

Is there an age limit for surgery?

  • In general, cosmetic surgery is not performed in children under 18 years of age, with some exceptions, such as otoplasty, which is recommended before the child enters school to avoid bulling, or breast hypertrophy during adolescence that can cause osteoarticular deformities. There is no upper age limit to undergo cosmetic surgery, although surgery over 60 years of age may have a higher risk of complications than at younger ages, the most important thing is the general condition of the patient and the presence of other diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, etc.

Is there a weight limit for surgery?

  • This is a very important point in breast surgery and body contouring surgery, such as liposuction and tummy tuck. Due to the risks of undergoing surgery of this type with a BMI (weight / height 2) over 27, I only perform these interventions in patients with a BMI less than 27.

Can I have more than one surgery at the same time?

  • It is possible to combine more than one intervention at the same time, such as abdominoplasty, gluteoplasty and liposuction. The important thing is that when combining the surgeries the surgical time is not too long. In general, to minimize surgical risk, I do not plan interventions that can last more than 6 hours.

Is cosmetic surgery safe?

  • Like any major surgical intervention, cosmetic surgery has risks, however these can be minimized by following the safety triangle proposed by the Chilean Society of Plastic Surgery: Informed patient, accredited Center and Certified Plastic Surgeon. In the consultation we can talk in depth about the risks of your intervention and clarify all the doubts you have.

Is cosmetic surgery very painful?

  • Pain depends on the type of intervention to be performed and the pain threshold of each patient. The surgery is performed under anesthesia, so the interventions are painless, and during the postoperative period you will be prescribed medications that relieve pain and inflammation to make your recovery more bearable.

How long can I go back to work after surgery?

  • This depends a lot on the intervention to be performed and the evolution that you had in the postoperative period, but generally in 2 weeks you will be able to return to your work for most of the interventions and in 3 weeks for more extensive interventions such as lipoabdominoplasty.

How long before can I exercise and go back to the gym after surgery?

  • It is important to maintain sports rest after surgery to aid healing and speedy recovery. From the fourth postoperative week, it is possible to start with light aerobic exercise such as walking and at the sixth postoperative week, exercise with weights can be incorporated. However, these times depend on each patient and the evolution they had after their surgery.

Will I have a scar?

  • Yes, all surgery leaves a scar, even a small one. The quality of the scar and how concealed it remains depends on many factors such as age, skin color, and care of the scar. I will accompany you during the healing process to try to achieve the most inapparent scar possible.

Breast Augmentation Surgery (Breast Implants)

Can I breastfeed if I have implants?

  • Yes, breast implants do not interfere with breastfeeding in any way. There is also no evidence that there is silicone or other material derived from the implants that is transferred to the milk.

How long do I have to stop breastfeeding to have breast surgery?

  • It is necessary to wait at least 6 months after the end of breastfeeding to be able to perform any breast surgery.

Will nipple sensitivity affect me?

  • There is a percentage of patients who have alteration of the sensitivity of the nipple after surgery and it can be produced both by access through the nipple and by access through the breast groove, therefore it is not possible to predict if you will have changes in sensitivity nipple, and is one of the necessary risks of assuming surgery.

Breast Reduction Surgery and Mastopexy

Can I breastfeed after a breast reduction or mastopexy?

  • Yes, you can breastfeed after a breast reduction, however, due to the drying and repositioning of the mammary gland, some patients may experience difficulty producing milk.

Are the scars very extensive?

  • The extent of the scar depends a lot on the breast of each patient. In general, the larger and sagging the breast, the more extensive the scars. However, with proper postoperative management, they can be very well concealed.

Will the sensation in my nipple decrease?

  • In general, very large or sagging breasts present alteration of the sensitivity of the nipple previously, this alteration is maintained in the postoperative period.

Will I have drains?

  • I usually leave a fine drain on each breast. This helps prevent fluid from collecting inside the breast. Drains are removed 24 to 48 hours after surgery.

Liposuction and Liposculpture

Is it useful to lose weight?

  • It is not a method to lose weight, since the exaggerated extraction of fat can be risky, so it is not recommended to extract more than 7% of the patient's body weight. This procedure is reserved for patients who have a certain distribution of fat to shape it and give it a more attractive contour and to remove localized deposits of fat.

If I gain weight, is it true that the fat goes to other places?

  • Because fat cells are extracted from certain areas, that particular place tends to gain less weight with weight gain, that is, even if you gain weight, the "shape" you get with surgery is maintained.

Tummy tuck

Is the scar very extensive?

  • The extent of the scar depends on the amount of redundant skin to be resected. The most common is a scar from one iliac crest to the other, which is hidden by pants or bikini. In patients who have lost a lot of weight and have a lot of skin excess, the scar can reach the back.

How long will I have drains?

  • Drainage is used in all abdominoplasty, which is left for 7 days on average. Drainage is intended to prevent fluid accumulation under the skin and prevent bruising.
