Otoplasty

Otoplasty, meaning shaping of the ear is the technical name for “ear surgery”. An Otoplasty corrects prominent ears so that they lie in a more aesthetic and simetrical manner.

This procedure does not change the size or shape of your ear, although some corrections can be made to the ear itself. This procedure’s main objective is o correct laterally prominent ears.

The most common complication of this surgery is relapse of the ear to its original position. During the first 6 weeks this complication can occur in which the ear composed of cartilage fails to hold its new shape

This surgery can be performed as early as age 5 when ears have grown to its adult size. Surgery is recommended at a young age to prevent social stigmatization associated with prominent ears. Surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis usually under local anesthesia with sedation for the adolescent and adult population. General anesthesia is recommended for young children to prevent injuries or trauma of the surgical experience.

An otoplasty takes between 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours. Postoperatively pain is minimal, throbbing is commonly reported as the local anesthesia wears off. Bandages around the head will be maintained about 5 days. After the initial bandage a head band will be worn for a recommended 6 weeks in order to maintain that shape. Stitches are placed behind the ear in an inconspicuous location and will be removed 5 to 7 days after surgery. Vigorous exercised should be avoided for the first 2 weeks and resumption of regular work and activities can be resumed by day 5. The most common side effects are sensitivity during cold weather worst during the first year of surgery. Numbness will be present 2 weeks after surgery and will return in a stepwise manner.
